Hello friends
Are you joining the Plastic Free July challenge and “choosing to refuse” single use plastics next month? You register here and can pledge to either
- avoid single-use plastic packaging,
- target takeaway bags/bottles/straws/coffee cups or
- go completely plastic-free
for anywhere from one day to the rest of time!
Plastic Free July was launched by The Western Metropolitan Regional Council in Perth WA in 2011 as a humble office campaign. Since then it has grown into an international movement. Now more than 2 million people from over 150 countries are participating to raise awareness, reduce landfill and help protect our oceans.
Our lives have changed so much in just a few short generations. As we became busier, businesses introduced lightweight disposable plastic items to make our lives easier. But with this convenience came a cost. One I’m sure was given no real consideration at the time.
Now, television programs such as War on Waste are bringing attention to the ecological damage caused by our throw away culture. People are changing their habits as business introduce new reusable products to replace disposable ones. I’m sure my great-grandmother would roll her eyes if she were still alive.
Over the month I will be adding some single-use plastic alternatives to the online shop for Plastic Free July. If you’re not already, follow us on Facebook or Instagram to learn the inspiring stories behind the Green Foot Mamas making these products, and their desire to improve the health of our planet for the future of our children.
Lisa.
